What’s behind that smile? An attempt to match the profile photographs of over 66,000 Twitter users with their character traits could bring firepower to those seeking to divine insights into individuals from their digital information that is. Such forecasts enrich a firm’s hiring process, or could help advertisers target ads more accurately, for instance.
“ An essential aspect of measuring personality through media is that it’s not obtrusive. You’re immediately detecting individuals’s behaviour rather than asking them to report on it,” claims Daniel Preoţiuc-Pietro at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, whose staff presented their research this week at the Global Conference on Net and Social Media in Cologne, Germany.

The staff then searched for the options that come with each profile image and correlations between evaluation results. A handful of significant relationships emerged.
People with conscientiousness scores, for example, tended to convey emotions that were positive inside their pictures, and to reveal themselves independently rather than in groups. Those that scored as very open seemed to favor arty photos. Neurotic folks tended strongly not to have their face observable at all. “These are pictures which people consider representative of their on-line persona,” claims Preoţiuc-Pietro.
To fast categorise the styles of thousands of Twitter users, Preoţiuc-Pietro and his co-workers analysed each person’s 3200 most recent tweets. In both instances, consumers were scored on the “Big Five” character traits: openness, agreeableness, extraversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism.
“This is a really great first step towards analysing images for disposition,” claims Jennifer Golbeck at the University of Maryland.
